5th FTMBA Class Launches: 30 students from 15 countries
Corporate-sponsored students get diverse, global experience in Japan
(Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) 30 students hailing from 15 countries joined the GLOBIS Community on Sunday, beginning their journeys in the one-year intensive Full-Time MBA program.
Marie Suzuki, of Japan, was sponsored by her company, Hoshino Resorts--Japan's leading resort company--to immerse herself in GLOBIS' diverse environment in Tokyo. She can remain close to her family, living near Sendai, the area of Japan affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Taking advantage of her company's educational leave program, she can earn an MBA in just one year, studying full-time with her classmates and a faculty covering five continents, and then returning to work ready to apply her new skills.
Chosen to give a speech to represent her class, she shared her concerned about the lack of economic opportunities in her hometown region even before the earthquake: "People categorized themselves as rarely having a chance to get freedom to seek their own happiness." At the same time, she recognizes the power of arts and culture to combat that thinking--that it takes "not only intellectual understanding, but also emotional movement, to change people's minds and behavior." As a professional business person specializing in art and culture, she is applying those lessons by helping her company expanding its foothold overseas, by incorporating local arts and culture into its services.
Hoshino Resorts CEO Yoshiharu Hoshino remarked that when Ms. Suzuki announced at her company's national Board Meeting that she wanted to study for her MBA at GLOBIS, he was very excited. "Studying with all that diversity in the midst of Tokyo, I look forward to seeing how she will have grown when she returns to our company." Hoshino Resorts has supported educational leave for 10 years, giving its employees a chance to learn new knowledge, expand their networks, and contribute to its customer with better service when they return.
Joining her as a class representative was Fund Lee, of Singapore. He began his speech by announcing that one of his greatest fears was speaking in front of people, recounting an experience when he was only 8 years old. He then shared why he decided to give this speech: "The reason is simple, it is to challenge myself because I no longer want to be in my comfort zone. Similar to the decision of joining GLOBIS, I wanted to challenge myself more, explore my own potential and achieve my ultimate goal of creating my own business." In his way, he inspired his classmates to do the same.
GLOBIS President Yoshito Hori commended the speeches, imploring them to use the power of education to pursue their dreams: "The power of education is the driving force for us in building GLOBIS. With it, new creation and innovation could become possible." He shared how GLOBIS grew from one room of 20 students to the No. 1 MBA program in Japan in only 24 years. "You shall be the ones to foster creation and innovation in Japan, Asia and the world."
